If you've never stayed at a Feather Down farm, you might not be familiar with creating a fire in your wood burner. Perfect for heating the tent if you have a chilly evening as well as cooking up delicious meals and tasty breakfasts for the whole family.
Creating a good fire is a great basis for a glamping trip so here's a step-by-step guide and a few handy tips too!

It's important to open the doors and vents so that the air can come through to give oxygen to the fire. Take care that it is clean before you start a new fire by tapping the flue for any loose debris and cleaning the ash tray.
Make sure your wood is dry. First insert two larger blocks of wood into the stove, then put two smaller pieces of kindling on top length wise, followed by two larger pieces. Between these last two blocks insert some fire-lighters. Finally put another layer of kindling cross-wise and fire-lighters in between.

Soon as you've got the fire-lighters in place, you can light the fire. Leave the door of the stove open a bit longer so that more oxygen can be sucked in. Once the fire has taken, you can close the door.
As soon as you see that the wood is almost burned up and that the ashes are smouldering, it's time to top up the wood. Do you have a fire bed? Then carefully lay it on top of the ash. If you have a wood burning stove then you can use the hole in the stove top to add more logs to the fire. Alternatively fill it via the door on the front.
Use firelighters - they make it easy to start a fire with kindling.
Wait for the flames to die down a little before cooking - the rising temperature will be hotter and so food will cook quicker (similar to waiting for coals to glow on a BBQ).
Never leave a burning fire unattended or use any additional fuel lighters.
Keep an eye on young children around the fire, it can get hot quickly! Use a fireguard as a deterrent and to give a protective space.
If you need a coffee first thing in the morning, boil your water the night before while cooking dinner and store in a thermal flask - it creates a great coffee or tea without waiting for the kettle to boil in the morning.
