Escape to a simpler life with Hannah and Will

How can a place just an hour’s drive out of London feel so secluded and peaceful, you will ask yourself as you arrive at this Bedfordshire farm? This must be the ideal spot for a family holiday close to London. Ideal for animal lovers, New Barn is a veritable mini zoo too. Your hosts are Will and Hannah Tongue along with their children Evie, Harry and Fergus. Your canvas hideaways are at the margins of the Blackwell Spinney face a six-acre field with grazing animals. Taking them all over is the perfect set up for those wanting to organise a gathering, whether it’s for the family or for organisations wanting to get away and bond together as a team.

Town and country

In the unlikely event that you fancy a return to civilisation, Oxford and Cambridge are within easy reach of New Barn – Bletchley Park too if you are into World War Two history. If the gee-gees are more your thing, then there’s the race-track at Towcester, or for petrol-heads Silverstone is close by. Closer to home there is the charming market town of Olney (which happens to be a good wild swimming spot too) or Carlton that you can get to on one of the bikes available to hire at the farm.

What to do at New Barn Farm

There is a whole menagerie of animals here, quite literally - a pig, three farm dogs, sheep, pygmy goats, geese, ducks, chickens and ponies to groom. You might also see and hear badgers, foxes, a variety of owls, woodpeckers and small Muntjac deer, all from the safety and comfort of your canvas hideaway. You can explore the woodland, while the footpath networks and grass field margins all around the farm give you ample space to walk, cycle and go-kart too. When the night falls, grab some of Hannah’s legendary homemade dishes from the honesty shop, or cook a hearty stew on your wood-burning stove before you collapse exhausted but happy into your welcome cosy bed.

Pizza night

The farmer will usually fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

Ask the farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer. But you don’t wait till then. The farmer will be delighted to tell you more about what goes on at the farm at any time.

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.

The best sort of holiday for a gang of 8 children aged between 3 and 9 , everything children need … freedom to run , roam and explore . A chance for them to make their own decisions. With the added excitement of fire ( and marshmallows!) The adults can pretend that cooking without modern conveniences is a pain but actually enjoying the challenge! Lovely snuggly beds to lie in and listen to nature, rain, wind, birds, day and night! ( rooster included!) A taste of the good old days but knowing that you can return to the present day later. All in all, a really great holiday! Thank you

Possibly our best farm yet after visiting 6 other Featherdown sites! Hannah and Will are so lovely and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. The farm is beautifully laid out with lots of animals to see and things to do with lots of lovely additions like bikes, go karts and a swing. The best for us as a big group was the communal area with benches round a fire pit and a covered seating area to play games and eat when it rained. The honesty shop is brilliant and the outdoor showers were great. We had an issue with hot water (not anyone's fault) and Will went out of his way to fix it as quickly as possible. We would definitely recommend!

We had a great time with our grandchildren, they loved looking after the chickens, visiting the ponies in the barn and playing on the go carts in the farm yard. We explored the farm and local area on bikes and enjoyed pizza evening when our hosts Hannah and Phil cooked pizzas for guests in an outdoor pizza oven. Having no electricity and internet made a fun change for a few days. The children enjoyed a level of freedom they don’t get to experience living in the city. The only downside was the shower in the tent, it was freezing! We were lucky that the weather was so hot, otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to use it. We did manage to get it to luke warm once or twice but not for long!

This farm is simply wonderful, we couldn't have asked for a better break away. The owners and their family are so kind and welcoming, and work hard to make your stay extra special. If you're taking children, there really is no need to leave the farm, ours have loved every second of the holiday and are already asking to go back!

We had a lovely, relaxing three days and never left the farm - our 4 and 7 year olds were totally delighted with the guinea pig pens, the peddle carts, the farm animals and running about in the fields. Pizza was delicious and recommended, as are the morning pastries. Will and Hannah were great hosts.

Will and Hannah were perfect hosts. Although some of our party were very late to arrive Will was able to assist with all luggage. Any little problem was met with a quick response and a "no problem" attitude. We were made to feel very welcome and both of them made this a truly memorable weekend.

The setting was excellent as was the food cooked for us. I dont like to complain as I know that this is a family business, however, there were some aspects where we felt the farm had lost interest since last time we visited. If it had been one thing it wouldn't have bothered us, however, they added up. We were told that they don't do den making anymore, then please don't advertise it, the boys were looking forward to it. There were only 2 guinea pigs when we booked 5, leaving the kids having to share, this would have been fine if we had known in advance. We were told when we got there that pony grooming may or may not be on and they would let us know. The pizza making was changed to the Sunday, we were told on the Friday and could not change our booking at the Pub because they were full. The pans and plates in one of the tents were filthy and we were told by the farmer that the previous guests had not cleaned up - really! particularly during covid, I would have thought all the plates would have been thoroughly cleaned. We could not find a bike with a connector that worked, so 2 of the party could not come on the bike ride. There were 2 contact lenses on the sink when we arrived.

We had a wonderful weekend. Tent was clean and well maintained. Will and Hannah were wonderful hosts. My son fell in love with the guinea pigs. Not all farms have a petting area so this was a real hit with all the childrenThe pizzas were brilliant, lots of ingredients to choose from and really tasty.

Amazing hosts, went above and beyond to make us all feel welcome. Our children had the best time too and didn't want to leave. This is our 8th Feather Down and we'd definitely come back here again. Best pizzas ever and great quality meat provided in the BBQ and Breakfast boxes. And the home made treats on offer were extremely tasty too!
