Escape to a simpler life with Guy

Just an hour’s drive from Newcastle is Northumberland Farm, run by the Douglas family who have farmed in this area for many generations. Their traditional farm grazes cattle and sheep on their grassland alongside other crops such as wheat, barley, field beans and even lucerne (otherwise known as alfalfa). With Northumberland being England’s most rural county and the farm less than a mile from the sea, there is lots of nature and wildlife on show from your tent – you can spot hares, badgers, red deer, at least three kinds of owl, yellowhammers, merlins, kestrels, curlews, geese, sandpipers, swans and buntings. Alternatively, you can walk down to the sea to some of the best beaches in the whole country with seals, dolphins and puffins! Where could be better for a family holiday in Northumberland?

History and tranquility at the Northumberland coast

Step back in time on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne or Bamburgh Castle - if you’ve seen a castle by the sea in a film or TV series, the chances are it was this one. Be sure to visit the pretty-as-a-picture Seahouses harbour and take a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the puffins between April and July. There are many local choices for food and entertainment – whether traditional harbour fish and chips or local pubs offering excellent gastro options including great local seafood, such as Lindisfarne oysters.

What to do at Northumberland Farm

Wake up from your comfy beds in the morning and breathe in the fresh sea air. You could learn about the farm’s ethos and focus on biodiversity on a friendly farm tour (if available during your visit) – everything that grows on the farm stays on the farm for the animals or ends up on your plate. The honesty shop is stocked full of local goodies, low in food miles.

We had an amazing weekend in Seahouses thanks to our stay at Featherdown. The staff were on hand when we arrived and showed us around, the accommodation was amazing and the whole experience was 5* from start to finish.

Fantastic accommodation on a lovely farm in a stunning location. Very friendly service throughout; our host was very helpful and made sure we had all we needed. The back-to-basics setting with no electricity etc was much needed and much appreciated. Spending every evening sat around a fire is about as good as it gets.

Had a wonderful experience as a family of four, both our girls (aged 3 and 10) had an amazing time. All of the appeal of camping, but with the luxury of a nice warm/clean shower and a comfy bed. The farm was wonderful, Claire was an exceptional host and we loved the farm tour with Guy. Such a fabulous location, a short drive to the beach with lots of beautiful castles and costal walks.

This was a magical stay, campfires, walks down farm tracks, the books by the sea library, the farm tour with the farmer 'Guy' was incredibly informative, educational and we really appreciated the time he took to show us around the farm and describe some of current practices and challenges UK farming faces. The site manager Lotti was also really welcoming, helpful and on hand throughout our stay, we definitely hope to stay again.

Excellent holiday, we didn't want to come home. Everything was exceptional from the hosts / location / accommodation / food. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we will be looking to re-book for next year. The accommodation was clean and tidy with everything you need, the beds were very comfy. Our host Lotti looked after us and ensured we had everything we needed. We booked the BBQ and Pizza night; the food was exceptional and I would highly recommend it, it is not to be missed. Just an excellent break, thank you.

This Featherdown Farm is a short car journey from Seahouses and the coast. There are great views over fields towards the sea- perfect for nature lovers to watch deer, owls and other birds from the tents, as well as local farm animals. The 5 tents are in close proximity, but this doesn't take away any privacy: they are positioned carefully. In the field, there is plenty of space for children to run free and play with other camping guests. The ensuite toilet and shower is excellent and such a luxury whilst camping. The tents do get quite chilly so we would advise to bring plenty of layers- it is still camping after all! Guy is only too happy to chat and show you around the farm, whilst Lotti is the perfect hostess.

We had a fabulous time and the farm site, tents etc were all excellent. Lotti was an extremely good site manager and really looked after us. For this particular Featherdown farm the one thing that really felt like was missing was a kids playground. All the kids in our group complained about this and it helps the grown ups if the kids have somewhere to play. I feel that it definitely needs this. Also the honesty shop was lovely and sold some fabulous things but there were no prices on anything - I do think this needs adding for transparency.

We had a brilliant time. The location and owners was a friendly, social and have safe environment for everyone. Our kids were able to thoroughly enjoy the outdoor and open air along with the layout of the lodges being good that you could either see or hear them with others and interact well and not have to worry, but still in our own spaces. The local recommendations plus of those also away at the same time helped us enjoy some lovely parts of the local area, and enjoy local businesses food offerings.

I recommend Northumberland farm so much, as it's SO EASY to get to via train & bus from London! One of the best vacations of my life! My six year old daughter and I spent the week unwinding and having fun on the farm. We learned so much, and our hosts were simply outstanding - they went above and beyond to make us feel at home and welcome.

Meet your hosts

Guy

The Douglas family have farmed traditionally in the area for hundreds of years, historically over the border in Scotland but in England for about the last hundred years.

Pizza night

The farmer might fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

Ask the farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer during your stay but you don’t have to wait until then. The farm staff will be delighted to tell you more about farm life at any time.

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.
