Escape to a simpler life with Joby and Martin

What could be more idyllic than staying on a working farm on the Dorset coast? East Shilvinghampton has been a part of the Bartlett family for over 80 years and meeting Martin and Joby’s cows, goats and hens will be one of the highlights of your holiday. Their son Henry looks after the alpacas and you can take them on a walk for a small fee. Your canvas hideaways are situated close to the farmyard and offer panoramic views across the valley. It's the ideal spot for a family holiday in Dorset.

Life on the Dorset coast

The abundance of nearby beaches will leave you spoilt for choice. These include West Bay, famous home of the Broadchurch TV series and Chesil Beach, part of the Jurassic Coast world heritage site. Throw in Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Hive Beach and Ringstead as well and you can enjoy a different beach each day. If you tire of the beach then pop into regal Weymouth, the favourite of King George the Third or ten minutes down the road is Abbotsbury with its medieval monastery and swannery.

What to do at East Shilvinghampton

There’s always something going on at East Shilvinghampton Farm. Where else can you wake up in the morning and walk a drovers trail, build a den or explore the farm while walking an alpaca? Farmer Martin is happy to stop by and chat and answer any questions you have about farming life when he is making his regular rounds. Children can play and roam freely on site within earshot while you relax by your canvas hideaway trying to spot deer, hares and owls. If you feel like cooking up a hearty stew, the farm’s honesty shop is well stocked with lots of local produce, beef and pork – or you can pre-order a wide range of enticing home cooked goodies from Joby.

Going without electricity is our greatest luxury

Pizza night

The farmer will usually fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.

Staying at a Featherdown Farm is as good as the taste of freshly brewed coffee on the stove, the sound of logs crackling on the campfire, the voices of children playing with animals, the pleasure of a glass of wine after a long day. I would visit again. And again.

A wonderful holiday for us and the kids alike! Beautifully kept site in a picturesque valley with amazing views - and the sunny April weather was a great bonus! Our hosts Martin and Joby were very welcoming and helpful and the home-cooked meals available in the farm shop for nights when you fancied a night off cooking were very tasty. The kids loved going in with the chickens to check for eggs, and the alpaca walk was lots of fun too. Leonard the tent-visiting farm cat was hilarious and we welcomed him in on several occasions. Very sociable site with lots of communal green space so the kids could enjoy some (socially distanced) ball games with other families and a central fire pit which was lovely on the cold evenings. Temperatures got down to zero overnight but the wood burner kept the tent lovely and warm, and we brought thermal PJs and extra blankets to keep us toasty once in bed. Loads of amazing day trips and things to do along the beautiful Jurassic Coast nearby made for a really memorable holiday - highly recommended!

A great experience! Martin & Joby are very welcoming, everything was well thought out from the moment we arrived and the kids had great fun transporting our luggage in wheelbarrows down to the tent! The accommodation was amazing and well equipped with amazing views across the farm. The ensuite shower was a godsend! And the kids had a great time even though the weather wasn't the best! We will be back next year! Thank yo for having us!

What a wonderful holiday - even better than expected! The lodge has all the luxuries except electricity, which makes for romantic candlelight and more playing outdoors and less screens. The hosts at E.Shilvinghampton were super friendly and the set up was great: goats, alpacas and horses in a paddock next door to the lodges’ enclosed field so kids could run around safely and pet animals as they liked. There’s even a track leading to a clearing in the woods with rope swings and dens to build. Loads of beaches and things to explore nearby. Loved it and hope to return soon!
