The magical myth of a secret garden becomes a reality at Chesters. Children will love the vast and extraordinary tree house right by the tents, as well as the mini beastie-safari, fort with slides, and climbing nets at Born in the Borders just over the river. It’s all part of Chesters. Adults will love the location of the tents, positioned as if embedded in nature. To take advantage of the inherent adventure of camping, each tent has its own Discovery Tent with campbeds, lights, table, chairs and paints and a small library of books on nature/adventure. Then there are activities including den building and following streams to the river to fish and go boating. From both Edinburgh and Newcastle, this glorious Grade One listed Georgian mansion and Country Estate in Scotland is just an hour and a half’s drive.
Chesters is full of delightful nooks and crannies, with the magical old walled garden an enticing centrepiece. The estate is home to cattle, roe deer, pheasants, partridges, ospreys and buzzards, and has a garden on the banks of the sparkling River Teviot with a run of salmon and brown trout to fish for, as an extra. Alternatively, order the fish served by the Gordon Ramsay-trained chef at Born in the Borders or the local Ancrum Cross Keys pub, 2 miles away. You can also cook up a delicious slow-cooked meal on the wood burning stove at your tent, with everyone pitching in for the most fulfilling result. There is a little shop on site for the essentials, and local shops are to be found nearby. Chesters even has its own real ale microbrewery.
On your arrival at Chesters you will be greeted at the Stables by Ellie, load up your luggage (wheelbarrows supplied) and be taken on a 7 minute walk to your tent – along magical paths, past your honesty shop and through the walled garden with pick-your-own fruit and veg (seasonal). Wellies recommended!
The Channel 4 programme Country House Rescue documented John and Ellie’s efforts to rejuvenate the house and grounds. They view their ownership of Chesters as an enormous privilege, doing all they can to make sure the estate is viable and can be shared with as many people as possible. Born in the Borders has a beautifully renovated visitor centre, with a cafe and restaurant set in one of the estate’s old farm buildings. It is devoted to local produce in all its forms – everything from cashmere to cheese and beer, and even boutique accessories. The prime attraction though is nature itself, which makes for a wonderful glamping holiday in this absolutely stunning spot in the Scottish Borders.

We all have had a lovely time, we went fri-mon. Great venue. John and Ellie were attentive hosts. The hot tub was great, the kids loved it (and the adults too!) Will hopefully return but for longer next time.
Mr. Brown (10)
Excellent time, Ellie was amazing
Mrs. Richardson (10)
A magical experience over and above expectations
Mrs. Gregory (10)
A relaxing yet adventure filled holiday. Camp fires, veg picking, exploring and den building kept the children entertained all week. The dog was very sad to return home.
Mrs. Towse (8.8)
The experience was nice. The wood burning stove took 2 hours to boil water and that is too long. It is a full time job to keep it going.
Mr. Groote (6.3)
We loved our stay at Chesters but we would of appreciated our neighbours being a bit quieter. Waking up at 6:30am with kids running about is not what you want while on holiday.
Miss Williams (8.8)
Wonderful! Exceeded expectations!
Mrs. Francis (10)
We were unfortunate that despite booking a weekend in July, we were the only ones on the site that weekend. It lacked atmosphere and we didn't see much of the hosts. It was therefore a bit of a lonely experience. We left feeling a bit let down and deflated.
Mrs. Bennett (6.3)
We had a fantastic time. Lots of beautiful grounds for the children to explore and a warm welcome from our hosts. The setting was peaceful and idyllic but plenty of activities locally nearby to enjoy.
Mrs. Morrison (10)
It was great, a real break from normal life. Just making a cup of tea and having a shower takes time and was so important so help change gear. Kids loved exploring and the freedom they had.
Mrs. Irvine (10)
Quiet & relaxing. Just what we needed !
Mr. Horne (10)
Excellent, location was superb.
Mr. Yeaman (10)
This holiday was a dream come true! The location could not be beaten in terms of beauty and the people that run the site couldn't have done more to help make us feel welcome. We were a large party of fourteen along with three babies and a dog and the accommodation exceeded all of our expectations. There was so much to do that we didn't need to leave Chesters Estate. We didn't want to leave and will definitely be back.
Ms. Wales (10)
Perfect. Could not have faulted a thing. From the greeting when we arrived from Ellie to her checking all went well prior to us leaving. It was the perfect antidote to every day stresses. I have never enjoyed a holiday as much.
Mrs. Nugent (10)
Mrs. Brooks (7.5)
Really good. Beautiful tent and surroundings. Almost perfect.Free wood and firelighters is a nice touch.Only comments for improvement would be:Really need to sort walk with luggage to tents. It is a long way. Quad bike with trailer? Golf buggy? Tractor ride? Are possible solutions? Perhaps have it ready at certain times between 4-6 check in then again at 10-11 check out?Showers run hot then cold, we could not get them to work - not up to the standard of the rest of the site.No boat for river crossing when we were there.Adding a childrens play area (tyre on rope, swing in tree etc) would be a nice addition around the treehouse.
Mr. Whittle (8.8)
Enjoyable and relaxing quality family time. The children are desperate to book our return visit and rate it as their ' best non-aeroplane holiday - EVER ! '
Mrs Davie (10.0)
Fabulous location with great facilities - hot tub and shower provided much excitement! Overall a fun and relaxing break with the family.
Mrs. Hemming (10.0)
Excellent location in fabulous woodland. Children loved den building and exploring the grounds, with our dog.
Mr. Whisker (10.0)
Very good overall. Hosts were very welcoming and the campsite is in a lovely setting. The tent and supporting facilities were good. Improvement would be to the slow check in process and overly long walk to the parking >500 metres. This was not helped by the small wheelbarrows which could not carry more than 2 bags at once.
Mr. Passemard (8.8)
Wonderfully relaxing new experience for the family. The location was beautiful and the owners couldn't have been any more helpful. It was wonderful to get away from the noise and hustle and bustle, waking each morning to a wonderful view with rabbits and squirrels joining us for breakfast.Well situated with lots to see and do locally and within an hour and a half of Edinburgh.
Mrs. Hart (10.0)
Very relaxing, very unique and would very much like to do it again
Mr. Knobbs (8.8)
A totally relaxing experience in a totally wonderful setting.
Mrs. Irvine (10.0)

Mr. Beattie (10.0)
Lovely retreat, great hosts, comfortable accommodation and surroundings. An absolute delight to disconnect from mod cons and return back to basics.
Mr. Roberts (10.0)
Wonderful setting on the estate providing lots of adventure for the kids (and us!).
Mrs. Bennett (10.0)
We were so lucky with the good weather we had during our stay. We had some lovely walks, BBQ's and a complete wind down with no TV or iPads to distract us. The dog had an amazing time too.
Mrs. Reid (10.0)
It was so liberating to escape technology and the demands of a busy everyday life and pause to take pleasure in the simple things, to take each day at our own pace and savour every moment together. My husband loved making fires for us, my children adored the outdoor shower and I wanted to stay in our secret adventure forever! We will be counting the weeks until our return!
Mrs. Hunt Brown (10.0)
We had a fab time at Chesters Country Retreat. John and Ellie where great hosts and took the time to show us around. Our tent was fab and our kids soon went off exploring the grounds.. We soon had the hot tub up to temperature and it was a great place to sit and relax whilst looking up at the amazing stars..
Mr. Baum (10.0)
One of our favourite holidays. We have never camped before and usually like the comfort of a hotel so we were slightly apprehensive however we felt it was just as luxurious but bags more fun! All the fun parts of camping but with comfy beds, privacy and hot showers! The kids loved it.
Mr. Murray (10.0)
Chesters is a lovely estate with a lot to do in the area. John and Ellie were very hospitable and helpful. The tent was great fun and a real treat for the children, who loved the cupboard bed the most! The view from the tent was very pretty across the barley fields and it was peaceful and private. Highly recommended.
Mrs. Mccracken (8.8)
It was our first time at a Feather Down Farm . We enjoyed the hot tub and the luxury of toilet and real beds, whilst still feeling close to nature. We live in London and felt joyful at being able to unzip a tent and be in a wood , near a stream . Children exploring with no urban fears and lungs filled with fresh air. We discovered that our son is a pyromaniac , like all 7 year old boys probably , and he was thrilled by making a fire and toasting bread and marshmallows . Despite the unseasonal rain we had a good break.
Ms. Harris (10.0)
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, a glorious part of Scotland with plenty to do.
Mrs. Reschke (8.8)
Very welcoming. Lovely location.
Mrs. Snaddon (7.5)
It was perfect
Mrs. Brown (8.8)
As usual it was great
Mrs. Kennedy (8.8)
Superb weekend - we all want to go back which is saying something for teenagers!
Mrs. Duxbury (10.0)
AMAZING!! We had two young children with us, a 4 year old and a 7 month old baby. Our 4 year old had a fantastic time she did something new each day. From cooking toast on a open camp fire to having a bath in a log burning hot tub to us getting her up in the middle of the night to look at the stars! The estate owners John and Ellie were very friendly and welcoming, our 4 year old enjoyed meeting their little girl. It has been a wonderful experience for us all. We will definitely do this again but once our baby is a little older and we can travel a little lighter!
Mr. Maciver (10.0)
Yes we all had a fab time! camping without camping hardships!_x000D_ _x000D_ Happy to have comments online signed as G13 family
Ms. Scanlan (10.0)
We didn't just have a pleasant stay - we had an excellent stay! Thge only probelm was that it was not long enough. We has a short stay (four nights / three days) - and no sooner had we unwound and got ourselves comfortable then we were off again. Very happy with what we found.
Mr. Horsfield (10.0)
The visit was enjoyed by all of us very much. We took our godchildren (15 & 17) for a last mini break before going back to school. _x000D_ Need to be fairly fit to tackle the hills if taking bikes.
Mrs. Ryan (10.0)
Our Family had a Fantastic time. Thank you for the hospitality .
Mrs. Mertens (8.8)
We had a fantastic time at chesters estate!! I was dreading it being a camping newbie! But it excelled my expectations totally. The owners john and ellie were lovely and very welcoming. Everything we could possibly have wanted on our first glamping holiday!
Mrs. Austin (10.0)
We are John and Ellie, and our project to fully rejuvenate the house and grounds was recently documented by the Channel 4 programme Country House Rescue. We will be your hosts throughout your stay, ably assisted by our daughter Lily and son Thomas.
