About Northumberland Farm

Northumberland Farm lies less than a mile from the beach and only a 15 minute walk into the seaside village of Seahouses in the North Northumberland AONB. (Voted “Best UK Holiday County of the Year” at the 2018 British Travel Awards). There are a host of visitor attractions on the doorstep including the huge breeding colonies of puffins and seals on the Farne Islands as well as grand castles at Bamburgh, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Dunstanburgh and Alnwick. The Douglas family have farmed in the area for many generations, traditionally in the Scottish Borders and then into England a hundred years ago or so. The farm is a traditional one with grassland supporting cattle and sheep alongside cereals such as wheat and barley.

This year, as we celebrate the end of lockdown, (hurrah!) we have decided to be a bit more playful with our food and dining options. We have spent the last few months working out an exciting seasonal range of offerings with the best of our local suppliers, ranging from local woodfired street food champions, BOX, to Lindisfarne Oysters, the inventors of kippers, Swallow Fish who smoke local line caught wild salmon within a mile of our farm, and most exciting for us, bringing you our own lamb and beef, reared on the farm. Food miles matter.

We will be hosting supper clubs, offering our recipes and also food for you to cook at your tent. The farmer will be in touch closer to your stay to walk you through the latest offerings available.

Activities at the farm:

Northumberland Farm has it all.  Come and experience luxury camping on a traditional working farm just moments from some of the most beautiful beaches England has to offer.  While you are here, learn about the farm and its ethos on a family-friendly tour with the farmer or even help him on his early morning rounds to check the animals. The traditional approach to farming works in harmony with nature and gives rise to superb biodiversity throughout the farm.   Birds, insects and other wildlife are in abundance such as hares, badgers, roe deer, owls, yellowhammers, merlins, kestrels, geese, swans and buntings. It truly is a wildlife haven! You will also be able to sample the best of the local area in our Honesty Shop which, in addition to daily essentials, offers local honey, ice cream and even oysters!

Explore the area:

Tourists have long been drawn to the Northumberland coastline. From a boat trip to the Farne Islands from the very pretty Seahouses harbour less than five minutes away to the splendour of Bamburgh Castle just ten minutes up the coast. Make sure to check the crossing times before setting off to Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the causeway to the island is flooded by the incoming tide twice a day!

Peace and tranquillity are easy to find away from the bustle of the busier spots, try Budle Bay and the mouth of the Long Nanny Burn, and the stunning walks along the coast from Low Newton, across crescent-shaped Embleton Bay to Dunstanburgh Castle and then onward to the capital of the kipper, the tiny village of Craster that crowds around a dramatic harbour.

Heading inland, the countryside soon becomes rolling and then quite hilly as you move into the northern end of the Pennines, locally known as the Cheviots and hosts the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is really big  – at 572 square miles  – and is Europe’s largest area of protected night sky. During the day there are superb walks across the moors and views over the border into Scotland while at night you can see thousands of miles into space at the Kielder Observatory.

The local village is Seahouses and is well equipped with useful shopping and amenities. Seahouses has been a tourist destination for over a hundred years. There are a load of local options for food and entertainment – whether traditional harbour fish and chips or local pubs offering excellent gastro options or really great local seafood and shellfish. The local oysters come from beds near Lindisfarne that date from 1381!

However you decide to plan your activities, there is lots to occupy visitors young and old.

Well behaved dogs are also welcome at Northumberland Farm.

The Douglas family

The Douglas family have farmed traditionally in the area for hundreds of years, historically over the border in Scotland but in England for about the last hundred years. Northumberland Farm follows an old school mixed farming system with beef cattle, sheep grazing in their fields and also arable crops such as wheat, barley and oilseed rape.
