Escape to a simpler life with Sarah and Mark

Cwmberach Uchaf Farm means ‘the upper valley of the river Berach’ in Welsh and it covers 55 acres of wild beauty on the western side of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Nature flourishes unchecked at this traditional Welsh farm that has been part of the Mark and Sarah Dempster’s family for generations – a stay here is like being in your own private 'Springwatch'. The animals are very special too with unusual sheep breeds such as the Badger Face Welsh Mountain, bees in their hives, chickens, goats and pigs - new-born lambs and piglets are a special spring-time treat. Your canvas hideaway is situated in a sheltered corner of the farm with amazing views south and west over the Amman valley and towards the Gower peninsula. If you are looking to get away from it all and re-balance in nature with a family holiday in the Brecon Beacons, Cwmberach Uchaf is for you.

Lakes and castles

Carreg Cennen castle can be reached via a beautiful five mile walking route over the Brecon Beacons. Perched 900 feet over the river, it has been voted Britain’s most romantic castle by the readers of Countryfile magazine. Llandeilo is a lovely old market town with boutiques and cafes only 6 miles away. The lakes of Llyn y Fan Fach and Lyn y Fan Fawr, both carved out by glaciers, make a good day trip, whilst there is pony trekking at Pentre Riding Stables and a red kite feeding station at Llandddeusant in the unlikely event that you don’t spot one over the farm. There is more than enough to do on your family holiday in the Brecon Beacons at Cwmberach Uchaf.

What to do at Cwmberach Uchaf Farm

The farm’s landscape has all you would expect from a National Park - pasture, moorland, woodland and mountains give you a genuine “away from it all” feeling. There were 15 years before Mark and Sarah took over in which the farm was left to return to nature so it has a ‘re-wilding’ feel to it, a real life nature reserve and home for badgers, foxes, owls, red kites and rare cuckoos and hen harriers - learn more when you take part in Mark’s farm tour, a master class in sustainable farming. On the way back, don’t forget to stop off at the honesty shop where you can buy locally produced honey and order meat boxes from the local butcher to cook over your outdoor barbecue before watching the night sky from this official Dark Sky Reserve.

Going without electricity is our greatest luxury

Pizza night

The farmer will usually fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

Ask the farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer. But you don’t wait till then. The farmer will be delighted to tell you more about how what goes on at the farm at any time.

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.

Meet your hosts

Sarah and Mark

We, Mark and Sarah Dempster and our two kids plus Tilly the dog, welcome you to our South Wales farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The farm has been in the family for several generations. Come and see our efforts to re-wild our farm whilst at the same time making it a productive hill farm.

Looking forward to having you on our beautiful land for an off-grid relaxed holiday in nature.

We loved the experience of being in the wild! The tent was so much more than we had expected and we really felt in another world

We had a fantastic stay that was way over our expectations. The farm is a fabulous place to unwind, it is peaceful and there are some brilliant views from the Safari Tent field. The shared facilities were brilliant and spotless. The kids play area and pizza night were big hits. And our tent was a home away from home. We had a brilliant experience and Sarah and Mark were great hosts. Left on a high!

Just amazing. Loved the location - views are like something from a film set. Tents are beautifully done, beds are comfortable and wonderfully cosy. Kids loved the bunk beds. Lots of attention to detail with beautiful oil lamps and lovely smart showers. We cant wait to come back.

As a first time "camper", it was brilliant. I never felt like anything was too much trouble for our hosts and we had just enough luxuries to allow us to feel like we were never too far from civilisation :)

Our 5th and definitely our favourite Featherdown. The location was stunning, and everything up to the usual Featherdown standard. The hosts, Mark and Sarah were wonderful. It's small size of only 4 tents made it really personal and lovely.

Wow, what a fantastic experience. The lodge was amazing with everything you could possibly need AND great facilities. Breathtaking views in surrene surroundings and so peaceful. Mark was a lovely host, ensuring we had an enjoyable stay with everything we needed. Welcome pack was useful with lots of information and places to see. A true taste of nature, a kinder, simpler way of living with an honesty shop on site, out in the open and all with a touch of luxury.

Cwmberach Uchaf Farm was just the most glorious place to stay. The hosts were warm, friendly and very helpful. The location was idyllic and had many wonderful places to visit very close by. The farm tour made you feel even more welcome and at at ease in your new environment. The canvas lodges were so comfortable, fully equipped and also very quaint. All made super easy with a lovely honesty shop, with fresh and local produce. Topping it off, very friendly animals on the farm, some incredible wildlife, and outstanding views.

A lovely weekend with the kids, they absolutely loved the farm and animals . The tent was great with enough mod cons to still be relaxing in all weathers but still feel like an adventure. We had to rotate the kids each night as they all wanted to sleep in the cupboard bed ! We’ll visit again !

We had a brilliant weekend. The kids loved the tent, the views, the farm tour, making friends with the animals (especially the dog) and playing ball games in the field. The kids thought finding a chicken in the shower was highly amusing!

Our first Feather Down stay and we really liked the set-up, very comfortable and plenty of nice and clever small touches, whilst keeping the fun of being under canvas. Cwmberach Uchaf is a very pleasant spot and Sarah & Mike’s warm hospitality make it special.

Our fifth Featherdown, all been lovely but think this was the best. Incredible views, lovely people, interesting farm tour, friendly animals and a shower block that makes the average hotel look scuzzy! The weather wasn't on our side but the Black Mountains are beautiful even in the rain, stayed cosy and had a great time with family.

Mr Gray

23/07/2018

Lovely hosts, quiet location hidden away in the hills. Variety of accommodation onsite from the four traditional Featherdown tents on the hillside, to a couple of 'shepherds huts' and an apartment over the honesty shop/shower block. All well spread out. Showers and honesty shop were superb, and worth the walk down the hill. Great views across countryside from the tents. Couple of horses, goats and sheep which were very friendly, plus chickens running about.

Unforgettable! My children had an amazing time through out. Enjoyed collecting their own eggs for breakfast! The couple who own the farm are most welcoming and helpful yet allow you your own space. Communal showers + bath are superb and recently renovated. Very child friendly atmosphere as they have 2 beautiful children themselves. Play area, endless walks with breathtaking views, water springs, and the list goes on. Can not recommend it enough and will definitely be going back.
