Close to the Nieuwkoopse fenlands in the village of Aarlanderveen in South Holland is TaarTenTuin (the cake garden). The farm is ideally situated, just a 30-minute drive from Schiphol. It is also an hour’s drive of Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and the coastal resort of Scheveningen. It is nevertheless an authentic South Holland farm experience.
Anton and Mariska are the proud owners of TaartenTuin and are looking forward to showing you the farm. Its range of animals include chickens, sheep, pigs and cows to rabbits, cats and a dog. They will welcome even more newborn baby animals in the spring. Although it is small scale, TaartenTuin is full of life and there is never a dull moment. The old barn has been converted into a cosy café. For your daily grocery needs, you will find the farm shop well stocked with homegrown vegetables, dairy products and wine.
Just outside this charming farm, the surrounding area also has a wealth of experiences to offer; The Nieuwkoopse fenlands are called the green heart of the Netherlands and are among the most important wetland areas in the country. The reed and marshlands are excellent places for bird spotting, hosting some priority bird species such as the purple heron, bitterns, terns, the great reed, and Savi’s warbler and bluethroat. Make use of the visitor center for their organised family activities or just take in the beautiful views — on foot, by bike or even in a boat or canoe.
There are stunning wide views of the meadows and the windmills make it seem as if you’re part of an old Dutch painting. The farm lies 4 meters under the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. The reclaimed land is being drained by the only working drainage mill in the world(!).
It’s possible to view one of the mills from the inside. At just 1km from TaarTenTuin it is also possible to visit “De Vooruitgang”. For just a small fee you will be able to pick up the children with the tractor, and after this, they’ll be able to enjoy some fun and games in the barn of De Vooruitgang, on the trampolines and ride around in the karts. You could also hire one of the traditional Canadian canoes to explore the local waters! Another fun outing is the Archeon in Alphen aan den Rijn: a world full of history. Learn how they used to live in the earlier days, prehistory and the middle ages. It’s even possible to participate in tons of activities, such as sword fights, calligraphy and shooting bow and arrow! You’ll be spoilt for choice. Will we see you at TaarTenTuin?
