Escape to a simpler life with Joy and Kevan

Located in the Shropshire Marches on the way to Wales, Upper Shadymoor is just an hour’s drive from Birmingham and an hour and a half from Manchester. You will be staying with Joy and Kevin Fox and their family but nature itself is the real star of the show. Bluebell woods and wild garlic flourish alongside Kerry Hill sheep, farm dogs, horses, goats, pigs, chickens and deer, the star attractions at Upper Shadymoor. Your canvas hideaways are located by the woodland gates where you’ll feel worlds away from city life - the ideal Shropshire family holiday.

Explore Shropshire

Further afield are the medieval towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow. Shrewbury boasts over 600 listed buildings and Ludlow is a foodie capital famous for its castle and theatre festivals. For nature lovers, there are plenty of walks around the Shropshire Hills, including Stiperstones, Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc and the Lawley – most with a pub along the way! The Severn Valley Steam Railway, one of Britain’s most successful restoration schemes, offers 16 miles of track set within beautiful scenery.

What to do at Upper Shadymoor Farm

There are possibly more activities on offer at Upper Shadymoor than at any other Feather Down Farm. The list is endless - pony grooming, deer safaris, dusk adventure are just the start. And for those that the water, there is the hot tub, floating jetty, boating, fishing and wild water swim package, often under the watchful gaze of the nearby deer. Wellness has always been a speciality at Upper Shadymoor before it was even a thing – Kevan’s farm walk focuses on the five senses but if you don’t fancy the exercise, there is always the on-farm masseuse to ease away your stresses in her nearby tepee. Don’t forget to stop by the farm’s honesty shop where you can order fresh bread, local produce and Kevan’s home-made meals. You can make a DIY pizza in the communal oven but whatever your choice of evening meal, you’ll find yourself pleasantly fatigued in your comfy bed ready for a good night’s sleep.

Unfortunately you cannot bring your dog to Upper Shadymoor.

Pizza night

The farmer will usually fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

Ask the farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer. But you don’t wait till then. The farmer will be delighted to tell you more about what goes on at the farm at any time.

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.

We had a fantastic family getaway, truly immersed in nature with lots to do on site. Kevan and Joy were great hosts, very welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate. We have 4 children of varying ages and there was something for everyone. The water experience was a great afternoon and we even got a glimpse of a stag! We would definitely recomend a visit!

This is our 5th Featherdown visit and by far the best. Joy and Kevan go above and beyond at every turn. It’s a truly magical experience and the water package was the highlight of our year! We loved the farm walk, the pony craft, the pizza oven and the freshly baked goodies in the morning. Perfect trip away and we will 100% be back! There is something very special about this particular Featherdown location.

We had an amazing weekend! Joy and Kevan were great hosts, we loved the farm tour, pony experience and dusk walk. The tent is well equipped, our son loved playing with the other children in the woods making dens and dams in the stream. Probably the best part was swimming in the lake and using the hot tub while being watched by the huge red deer. Thank you so much Joy and Kevan! Highly recommend this farm.

Joy, Kevan and the whole family were so welcoming and caring - we stayed on the farm all weekend and had an amazing time - keeping 4 children from 9 to 15 happy and interested all weekend - even on the rain on Monday! The farm was beautiful and all the activities were amazing - fly fishing, hot tubbing, pony grooming, canoeing, wild swimming and BBQs etc!

Brilliant fun for all the family and we loved the lake. As a group we had 15 children altogether who enjoyed spending the days exploring the woods, the stream, riding their bikes and being outdoor kids. It was a perfect break

Very family friendly. Our grandchildren enjoyed the organised activities and loved the freedom to play and explore the open space, woods and stream in safety. We really appreciated the time and thought that Kevan and Joy invested in making this a memorable holiday.

Upper Shadymoor farm was a delightful setting. We felt very close to nature yet the cabin with frills kept us very comfortable. Kevan and Joy Fox, the farmers (and their sons), were superb hosts, engaging with adults and children alike. They were happy to answer questions, quickly fix problems without any fuss and always eager to help us get to know their farm, the animals and the wildlife. A wonderful Featherdown experience. Highly recommended!!

A wonderful weekend of fun on the farm. Joy and Kevan were very welcoming and helpful thorough out. We loved the added extras of the complimentary farm tour and the water experience is a must! Seeing the red deer whilst wild swimming was quite unique. The kids loved checking the chicken coops regularly for fresh eggs as well. Thank you so much for such a wonderful weekend - we will be back!

Mrs Reynolds

Lovely location but the hospitality was terrible. A very simple request of an extra set of sheets was not met well. The farmers attitude and behaviour to this request was NOT acceptable and tainted an otherwise nice stay. As someone else mentions you feel a complete inconvenience. Because of this alone I would not recommend this. I am a big FD fan but not of this one at all.

Beautiful location and standard of accommodation was good as always with Featherdown, however the hospitality of the farmer was appalling. A simple request for a set of bed sheets was met with unbelievable rudeness. I would strongly recommend not visiting this site. Others are far better.
