Escape to a simpler life with Tamara

Set in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the woodland site at Acton Scott offers you a peaceful and relaxing stay and some of the finest natural scenery in England. The Acton family have owned the land since the 12th century and are focused in preserving the history and heritage of the estate. Your canvas hideaways are tucked away each with their own private clearing, in the tranquil setting of Hatton Wood, a 20 acre plantation of native trees - the ideal setting for a family holiday in Shropshire. Your host will be Tamara who will welcome you in with a drink’s night on your check-in day, the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow Feather Downers and find out more about the area. She is also something of an expert in the tradition of making bobbin lace and would be more than happy to initiate you as to how it is done.

Explore Shropshire

The Shropshire Hills are a walking paradise; don’t forget to take in Ragleth Hill and Wenlock Edge, rural idylls made famous in ‘A Shropshire Lad’ by the poet A.E. Housman. Further afield are the medieval towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow. Shrewsbury boasts over 600 listed buildings and Ludlow is a foodie capital famous for its castle and theatre festivals. You couldn't be better placed than Acton Scott for a family holiday in Shropshire.

What to do at Church Stretton

Although your canvas hideaways are not on a working farm, you will be supplied with a fresh bottle of milk from the Proper Good Dairy, whose cows graze on the nearby fields. If you fancy a morning stroll, it’s a short walk to the dairy for a top-up from the milk vending machine. On your way back, admire the estate’s farmsteads, stone and timber-framed cottages, untouched woodland and open pasture. From your canvas hideaway, you can enjoy the sounds of owls and skylarks and the beauty of the surrounding flora and fauna. Take an evening barbecue on the veranda before dipping into your private hot tub (bookable in advance) beneath the stars. All of the canvas hideaways come with private hot tub and panoramic views of the surrounding hills and comfy beds to retire to after your exertions.

The Acton family has owned land here since the 12th century. In recent times, when many landowners obliterated all traces of the past in pursuit of modernisation, they chose instead to lovingly preserve the history and heritage of their estate, which is much in evidence today. As a result, Church Stretton has become a firm favourite through television appearances and visitors that travel to experience its beauty year-round.

Phil was a fantastic host and made us very welcome. I would suggest getting the hot tub started as soon as you arrive - it takes a long time to heat up! Definitely make a visit to the Historic Working Farm - great for kids, and the Ludlow Farm shop for great food.

The peace & quite was brilliant. We completely shut ourselves off from the outside world unless traveling to local towns. Hosts were amazing. Phil makes sure you are ready for the "back to basics" experience and leaves you alone unless really needed, great hosts. Plus side. no electric, (12-volt battery for lights) no WIFI, No TV, made the trip so peaceful and relaxing. To see dear, rabbits, hear the woodpeckers was just amazing. Negative-If you like going to the pub, 2 miles to nearest one but we stocked up on Gin & tonic so that wasn't really an issue for us. Loved the hot tub, but please paddle a couple of times when warming it up. Takes about 3 hours initially but then about 20 minutes subsequent times. It gets very hot, keep an eye on it. Great addition... Wooden stove is lush. fire it up for the cooking...really easy. Lock yourself away from the rat race for the most relaxing time.

Fantastic site in the woods, very relaxing and great tents and facilities. The hosts were extremely helpful and have done a great job in keeping the tents and site in fantastic condition. The tents are nicely spaced and very private but close enough if you are in a group. A visit to the Acton Scott farm is a must, the hosts have negotiated free entry for Featherdown guests and it is a great day out and the cafe is also excellent.

An enjoyable secluded forest retreat (only 4 tents), almost back to nature with a few home comforts - (hot showers through a bucket). Very friendly and helpful hosts.

Warm welcome and clean tidy tent. Site not as nice as other we have stayed at as no view and dark due to woodland location. Unfortunately there were dried blood stains on some of the linen but standard of cleanliness excellent otherwise. Shame not to have a chicken coop and the 'shop' was not well stocked, limited kindling, ice blocks. Overall a lovely weekend but won't be rushing back as location in the wood wasn't for us!

We had a fantastic stay at Acton Scott. It was lovely to have some time away and an opportunity to switch off from it all. Our boys had an amazing time playing in the woods, in the hot tub and helping feed and care for the animals at the farm. Mark was a great host and nothing was too much trouble. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

We had a great time, our only complaint would be that this site has no view and very little sun. It's great for kids that want to play in woods making dens but in the rain it can become a bit dank.

A definite step awa from everyday life! Our 2nd Featherdown experience - this one more like a forest experience with a farm nearby. Appreciated all the wood that was available, and the electric lights were not expected, but actually very useful. Great standard of interiors and equipment etc. Our well behaved Labrador also had a fantastic weekend!
