Escape to a simpler life with Alison and Neil

Feather Down’s first ever vineyard, Great Barn, is close to the town of Battle in Sussex. It is an artisan small-scale vineyard specialising in English sparkling wine. It is one of many local vineyards so you can make a tasting tour of the area during your stay. In fact, vineyards have always been part of the history of this part of Sussex since the 11th century; 22 vineyards in the area are listed in the Domesday Book. Your hosts Alison and Neil are ready to tell you about the rapidly expanding English wine scene, making Great Barn the ideal spot for a UK based vineyard holiday. Neil is regularly in the vineyard so don't hesitate to button-hole him about the details of wine making and the viticultural industry when he is out and about.

1066 and all that

You may be surprised to learn that the Battle of Hastings did not take place in Hastings - it took place at Battle! Tread in the footsteps of King Harold and the conquering William of Normandy and re-live our island history at the English Heritage visitor attraction next door – the children’s tour is a must. In fact, the Great Barn at the vineyard used to belong to the grounds of the Abbey there. The nearby towns of Rye and Winchelsea are steeped in history and make sure you don’t miss Hastings itself, especially its quaint old town. An added bonus is that you can walk to Battle and to Battle station through the woods so you can have yourselves a sustainable trip to Great Barn.

What to do at Battle Vineyard

Indulge yourself in wine-tasting of an afternoon - you deserve it - and at a vineyard this close to London! Better still, if you have booked the canvas hideaway with the hot tub, you can have a soak with glass in hand or cup of tea - it soon becomes clear why it is that this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - and then wear yourselves out exploring the ancient woodland behind your canvas hideaway. After that you can retire to your veranda to sit back, relax and listen to the sounds of nature whilst tasting the fruits of an English vineyard.

Ask the Farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer during your stay. But you don’t wait till then. The farmer will be delighted to tell you more about farm life at any time.

The Farm Shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.

Very peaceful location only 3 tents on site. Alison is a great host very helpful and friendly and returned calls Immediately before arrival and nothing too much trouble whilst there. Tents very well equipped and hot shower. The hot tub is a lovely extra. Definitely worth paying the extra few pounds to have the bunk beds made up! Honesty shop is well stocked with luxury and essential items and a couple of plug sockets. Overall an enjoyable stay with easy access to Battle and 30 minutes from Camber Sands.

Mrs Martin Moss

We had a wonderful experience. The hosts were very friendly. The tent and hot tube are very new and welcoming, all very cosy at night once the fire is going. The area where the tents are is separated from the area of the owners house, you very much feel like you are in a forest clearing. The tuck shop was a great success with the kids! My only comment is that you can hear a nearby road at times in the morning which is a shame.

Location and tent were fantastic. The wine tasting (neil) was above our expectations. We will visit again and certainly recommend to others. Alison was very helpful and kind/warm in her hospitality.

Mr Falder

A first class experience with excellent hosts, location and facilities

Mrs Ratcliffe

A beautiful setting in the Kent countryside with lots of fun for all of us.

Mrs. Myers

Perfect for campers to take their non-camping friends & partners. Very comfortable and spacious facilities but which retained that camping feel - the private bathroom with good hot shower exceeded expectation. The hot tub was a lovely touch especially on clear starry nights although good fun under a big umbrella in the rain as well! Be prepared to light and tend fires for heating and cooking although a simple gaz camping cooker is available to use from the honesty shop for that quick early early morning cuppa. Lovely setting and very good host.

Miss Heirs

Excellent. This holiday exceeded expectations. Food hampers were an absolute delight; all fresh produce locally sourced. The ‘battle bangers’ (sausages) were amazing. I would definitely recommend buying that for your stay. The afternoon tea was magnificent; all the cakes, scones and sandwiches were lovely. The tea was served in Royal Albert china adding a touch of luxury. I would recommend doing the afternoon tea. The wine tasting was great, educational as well as fun and you get three great big glasses of wine to taste - we were generously given our favourite bottle to take with us. Again, I would strongly recommend the wine tasting (no driving afterwards!). The cabin itself was wonderful, big double bed which was comfy - lovely, soft bedsheets. Bathroom shower was lovely too, hot running water and surprisingly strong water pressure. Kitchen had every utensil, crockery, glasses, mugs etc needed. The wood burner was great and warmed the cabin well when it was more chilly at night; after around an hour and a half, the whole cabin was warmed. It was fun to cook on top of the wood burner too. And last, but certainly not least, the hot tub! Just excellent! We sat in the hot tub looking at the stars at night and overlooking the beautiful view in the day. I have not felt this relaxed and happy in a long time! I would 100% recommend a visit.

Mr Tanton

Me and my family had a great time and look forward to doing it again!

Mr Hollis-Richards

Relaxing UK break with a difference. Would definitely return.

Ms Pascoe

We had a lovely four night stay at this beautiful vineyard. Everything about our stay was perfect - the lodges are amazing; super comfortable beds (and it was lovely and dark in the bedrooms); great hot shower; fully equipped kitchen (we were glad we had brought a little camping gas cooker though for morning tea as the log burner does take a while!); everything you need in the honesty shop; loved the wine tasting and the afternoon tea too; big thank you to our hosts and hope to be back soon!

Mrs hodge

The hosts, location and accommodation were all super.

Mrs Shaw

Very relaxing

Mr Malbon

Really well looked after by Alison. Lovely location. There's nowhere else to put comments so I have to add here: really needs a properly equipped kitchen. Not enough basics (fish slice, tongs for example). The long walk to the tents will be a surprise and put some people off - they should have allowed us to drive down and drop gear off. The instructions to get there need urgent attention: we ended up in an old lady's driveway twice following satnav - it's in the wrong place currently. The honesty shop needs to have more things in it. Not a great range. Saying all this so the owners have time to make improvements as they were fantastic and the site itself is great.

Ms Shuttlewood

Luxury outdoor living in a beautiful setting. Alison and Neil were very attentive and friendly hosts and went to extra lengths to make our stay memorable and personal. We had everything we needed and have taken home many special memories from our stay.
