Terschelling

Terschelling, off the coast of Holland

If you are seeking a family holiday with a difference, do consider going to Terschelling, just north of Holland. It is one of the West Frisian Islands, situated in the North Sea between Vlieland and Ameland. Because of this situation, the shores of the island have been a destination for debris from ships. Indeed, many of its farms are built of masts recovered from old shipwrecks, adding architectural charm to natural beauty. Aside from farming, much of the island is a nature reserve, which makes it ideal for a family holiday.

Visting life on the farm

There is no need to leave the family pet behind; you can bring your dog to a Feather Down farm tent. You can even rent a chicken, rabbit or guinea pig to care for during your stay. In addition to enjoying the environment of the island, your children will learn about sheep farming and shearing, milking and cheese making. Although the tents have no power supply, your fee covers eggs from the farm, firewood and water, candles and other necessaries so that you really will be glamping.

Annual Terschelling events

You and your family will love the annual Oerol Festival, which takes place on the island in June. It lasts ten days and involves public theatre, live music and the visual arts. But the real joy of a family holiday on the island lies the proximity to nature, the beautiful beach, the sea and the sky.

Leave the car on the mainland, get the bike hire company to look after your luggage and enjoy a beautiful cycle to the campsite. Once there, unwind, and enjoy the most beautiful surroundings - fresh air, no traffic, lots of wildlife, stunning landscapes and empty beaches. All the beach bars are great, but we especially loved the milkshakes and burgers at the Heartbreak Hotel, and the falafel pitas at Zandzeebar!
