Loop Head sits on the peninsula of the same name, which was named the Irish Times’ “Best Place to holiday” winner in 2013. The peninsula is scattered with little beaches, meaning there’s lots to do and explore. The Feather Down location itself is a Responsible Tourism Silver Award winner in the category of best small accommodation provider. Loop Head specialises in yoga and sauna sessions, and a lovely community feeling permeates the environment. It’s south-facing and overlooks the Shannon Estuary with its native woodland in the foreground.
The lodges are sited in an orchard permaculture garden with two natural ponds for biodiversity and fruit bushes dotted all around. The dramatic Kerry Mountains dominate the views to the south and lush woodland is all around. Let your children’s imaginations run wild in the “children’s den”, a big tree that children have decorated and made their own. Exploring the farm, you’ll meet Lizzie and Scamp, lovable and child-friendly dogs. Donkeys Betty and Jack will contentedly munch food from your hand, and Old Dubh (Gaelic for black) the cat often sits with guests. Hens, the cockerel and Monty the pony – when he is back from the local riding centre in April, Sept and Oct – complete the friendly menagerie.
Loop Head are finalising their own walking maps so you can begin roaming the area right from your doorstep. Querrin Shore shingle beach is a 20-minute walk away, and is great for swimming at high tide. At low tide, walk to the “island”, a Natura 2000 designated Special Protected Area (SPA). Here you can find curlews, oyster catchers, herons and egrets. The peninsula offers great whale and dolphin watching too. The perfect sandy beach, Glasheen beach at Doonaha, is only 4 km away.
For a fun family meal, book the pizza oven and Kevin will help you with your first pizza. Excellent eating and drinking options are also to be found at Murphy Blacks, the Strand Bistro, The Long Dock in Carrigaholt or Keatings Bar in Kilbaha. Alternatively, enjoy fresh seafood at the pier of the neighbouring village. You’ll certainly have built up an appetite after participating in horse riding, trekking, biking or water sports, all available here. There is a festival every month in summer until September too, celebrating everything from seafood, walking or families to one of Trea and Kevin’s own specialties, yoga.

For 7 of the last 8 summers we have glamped with Featherdown as we like the unusual experience so much. We know we can expect a high quality experience on a farm with a lovely host family in gorgeous country side in tranquility and an honesty shop. All in all this adds up to a memorable week for us which is a little bit different. Hence we don't mind paying that little bit extra. For the first time this year we were VERY disappointed with our experience. Loop Head begs many questions of Featherdown's quality control. Worst of all was the full morning of noisy JCB digging which went on about 50m from our tent. I shall send you the videos by separate mail. Two tents squeezed into a corner of the Loop Head site gave us the feeling that we were an 'add on' rather than the main centre of attention, as is the case on other Featherdown farms. There is no honesty shop, which the children usually adore. No local produce such as bread or sausages for a cooked breakfast. The owners were fine, staying up late to receive us the first night and providing helpful suggestions of good places to visit. Yet, unlike other Featherdown experiences, they did not go out of their way to check all was well with us each day. Again this added to the feeling that we were simply an added way to make some cash. All in all it was a tremendous let down and now we have started to question if we shall go with Featherdown next summer.
