Lake District, Cumbria

Guests both big and small have commented that Howbeck Lodge is their ‘little piece of heaven’ – a description we love to hear as we feel the same!

Farmer John (as our younger guests affectionately call him) enjoys keeping the kids entertained with tractor and trailer rides, meeting the Highland Cattle, feeding the lambs, caring for the chickens and cuddling the rabbits.

Being inside the Lake District National Park makes the farm a great base for walkers, and our tents’ setting beside an enchanting stream, the company of red squirrels and the prettiest Farm Larder anywhere, always goes down well.

Many of our repeat visitors return just for spring lambing, and during the summer there are near-weekly agricultural shows at which to experience a rich slice of rural England. You may even see John there with his sheep – they’re regular trophy winners!

Local pubs like the Mill in Mungrisdale and the Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket, a microbrewery where Prince Charles has been spotted in the past, are great attractions for their local food and beers.

The beautiful lakes of this famed area are all within easy reach of us and Keswick, the area’s most popular day trip destination, is only 12 miles away. The picturesque village of Caldbeck – birthplace of the legendary John Peel – is two miles, and boasts lovely gift shops and tearooms. For those who love the great outdoors we can give tips on the many trails and footpaths leading straight from the farm – from gentle strolls to strenuous Fell walks. There is also pony trekking within half an hour’s drive.
